Please invent anti-noise silence (headphones?)
Joel Spolsky, a blogger most IT specialists stumble upon soon after starting to read the web, recently did a blog entry about a small convienient item yet to be developed. It made me realize there is something entirely different I have long been longing for and that I should do a wee blog entry about it.
My problem is with noise pollution all around me. I would like to be in silence bubble and not hear what is going on around me. It would be essential at work to be able to concentrate on what I am doing right at that moment. Answering questions via messenger disturbs me a lot less than having to process the sound through my ears and any additional non-verbal information with it. I have tried to make headphones the sign that I don’t want to be disturbed, sometimes I don’t even put any music on, but the sounds all around me disturb me nontheless. If I put on some music and turn the volume up enough as to suppress the sounds, then a) the music is so loud as to be a disturbance in itself, even if it is good, and b) I am doing another bit of irreversible damage to my ears.
I would listen to a lot less music if I could put on the headphones as I do now and turn up the silence-that-suppresses-sounds. It would be perfect at times I need to concentrate and others do not have pressing issues to discuss with me (the last being rare, me being an analyst) and I need to get something done, something that needs intense concentration.
One of my physics teacher once told us (if I didn’t misunderstand and my memory hasn’t modified it to give me more hope than there really is) that perfect sound suppressing is possible using wave interference (catch the sound waves and create just the opposite waves, that create such interference that all the waves are flattened), but they don’t do it for cars because they tested it and realised that the driver needs to hear what sound the engine makes. Well, I understand, but I do not need to hear noise pollution all about me all the time*. Quick search on google showed results for noise suppressors for jet engines, background noise and the like so it shouldn’t be that impossible to make one for all sounds, unfiltered. I don’t deny the possibility that such product already exists, my search for it hasn’t been nearly exhaustive enough - I would be happy to get an answer in comments as to the location where I could order it right now :)
Please, somebody, invent it..? And market so as it would reach masses, me included… I would be quite thankful.
* For some reason I need to hear traffic and so can’t walk around in my own music bubble. And sometimes I would be glad to hear what others are talking to me or what the band/orchestra at the concert plays. Or something. So making myself deaf is not a solution :D
